Phoenix Signal: Transforming Disaster Communication

The Phoenix Signal is a groundbreaking tethered drone system designed to restore communication in disaster-stricken areas, particularly within the critical first 72 hours after an earthquake. Unlike conventional drones, this innovation operates without batteries, drawing continuous power from a generator via a tether, enabling uninterrupted flight for up to 36 hours. Its heavy-lift octocopter frame integrates an access point and a satellite internet module, such as Starlink, to deliver free, reliable internet connectivity for up to 500 users. Incorporating HPE Aruba Networking access points with Wi-Fi 6 technology, the system leverages OFDMA and Multi-User MIMO to optimize performance, reduce interference, and accommodate growing IoT demands.

The Tether Drone Ground Station provides drones with continuous power and data connectivity through an automated system comprising a drum, servo motor, and worm shaft. The system’s automated cable reel ensures stability in adverse weather, while advanced Pixhawk PX4 controllers and carbon fiber components enhance efficiency and resilience. This setup ensures precise cable management, uninterrupted operation, and safe deployment, making it ideal for long-duration surveillance, real-time data collection, and stationary flight in various applications. With IP-rated materials ensuring durability in harsh conditions, it bridges the communication gap when infrastructure is compromised, providing a lifeline for rescue operations and affected communities.
